Morning Cruise on Lake Windermere at the Lake District

26 December 2012

Our Christmas program at Waterhead Hotel included a complimentary lake cruise from Ambleside to Bowness-on-Windermere and back.  So the plan on Boxing Day was to take the morning cruise after breakfast and drive down to Wast Water in the afternoon.

Part of our brunch on Boxing Day at Waterhead Hotel – Egg Benedict.

We took the 10 AM boat from Ambleside pier and there was not many people out this early on Boxing Day. We had almost the whole boat to ourselves.

We decided to stay warm in the cabin below rather than brave the cold wind in the moving boat.

Lake Windermere cruise

The cruise to Bowness-on-Windermere took about 30 minutes. Bowness-on-Windermere is a busier town compared to Ambleside. I actually chose to stay at Ambleside as I prefer the peace and serenity of Ambleside.

Lake Windermere at the Lake DistrictBusy, busy Bowness-on-Windermere promenade. Not just plenty of birds and fowls but people too.

We lingered around the pier at Bowness-on-Windermere, just long enough to catch the next boat back to Ambleside at 11 AM.

Bus loads of tourists descended upon Windermere pier as this is a popular place to embark on a lake cruise. We needed to queue to get onto a boat back to Ambleside. It was fully loaded by the time our turn came. We were left with the seats on the top deck but we are well prepared for the cold journey back. In fact, it was quite fun to feel the cold air on our faces as we headed back towards Ambleside.

Half day road trip to Wast Water from Ambleside, Lake District

26 December 2012

Wast Water (sometimes spelled Wastwater) is the deepest lake in the Lake District. In an ITV television program in 2007, Wastwater in the Lake District has been named as Britain’s favourite view after the public chose from four landscapes.

In order to get to the Lake from the east,  we need to drive over the two passes of Wrynose and Hardknott.  Driving to Wast Water by car was part of the fun. Besides going over the challenging mountain passes, there were some narrow single track roads to negotiate.

We left our hotel in the Lake District (Waterhead Hotel) on A591 and then take the A593 at Ambleside. From the A593 we took a right turn into a narrow single track road leading to the Langdale and the Hardknott Pass route to Wast Water.

It was quite nervy driving on the single track road as it would be a real pain if we encountered another vehicle coming from the opposite direction. The single track road passed back close to homesteads and farmhouses. We were so close to the farmhouses that we were literally in a farmer’s backyard.

One of the local sheep peering at us.

We soon saw a sign with the following warning before we went to the Hardknott Pass.

“30 degree gradient, narrow roads, severe bends, winter conditions can be dangerous, not suitable for caravans”.

Lake District EnglandCloudy sky but no heavy rain. So negotiating the Hardknott Pass should not be a problem today.

We came to stone bridge marking the start of the HardKnott Pass with 30 degree gradient, sharp bends, narrow roads. The drive up was thrilling for the non-drivers in the family.

Someone in the car was commenting that it was like going up the Applecross Pass in Scotland, but it was really a much easier drive than Applecross. Fortunately the Audi A4 is a powerful car and very capable of pulling up the steep slope. The views were gorgeous despite the cloudy sky.

(See my previous drive up Applecross Pass here)

Once we came down from the Hardknott Pass, it was more single track roads to Wast Water.

Wast Water is a lake formed by glacier action and is long, narrow and deep, like those loch in Scotland. It is the deepest lake in England at 258 feet.

One of the stops we made along the shore. Flat shores with an access road on one side and steep slopes on the opposite side.

Awesome view of Wast Water in the Lake District.

At the last stop, the boys were again challenging each other with dipping their feet in cold water. Who could last the longest?

Icy feet challenge. Dipping feet into the cold water.

Fun having cold feet. The winner.

There was a guy in wet suit actually swimming laps in the icy cold water. Amazing.

We were quite surprised by a flock of sheep that came round a bend in the road. No shepherd in sight. The sheep just came round on their own and started to graze on the grass by our car.

The sheep then continue down the narrow road.

To really appreciate the scale and awesomeness of the mountains and lake, I took a series of photos to create the following panoramic photos.

Wast Water, Lake District EnglandSingle track road could be seen running by the shore of Wast Water. We made a couple of stops along the way to take in different viewpoints.

The sky turns dark by about 4 PM, so we started to leave Wast Water before that. We took the longer but safer way back from Wast Water using the highways via Gosforth. then heading northwards on the A595, A66 and then A591 back to Ambleside. Definitely no going through the Hardknott Pass and single track road after dark.

The final evening’s three course dinner at our hotel in Ambleside (Waterhead Hotel) featured the hotel chef’s twist on some traditional British Pub favourites served in the Bar & Grill.

Following this, we took part in the Festive Pub Quiz event in the Bar and Lounge.  We did pretty well in some rounds like movies and pictures, but not in others where the questions were more bias towards knowledge of the UK and local knowledge. Quite fun and relaxing after a long day out in Wast Water.

Morning with the geese at Borrans Park, Lake District England

27 December 2012

I woke early and went to Borrans Park near Ambleside, Lake District to shoot some photos while the rest of family were still in bed. The geese were up early too.

It was not often that I could get such opportunity to shoot in such scenic location and especially in such lighting conditions. Some experimentation with the dials of my DSLR certainly needed.

Here are some of the photos of the geese at Borrans Park on a winter morning.

Revisit to Derwent Water, Keswick and the long drive to Cheltenham

27 December 2012

Our next destination after spending Christmas at Lake District would be Cheltenham, for an overnight stay, and then back to Bath.

I enjoyed my stay at Keswick so much in my previous visit to Lake District in 2010. This prompted me to do a stopover at Keswick again on the way to Cheltenham.

I parked the car at the familiar car park next to Crow Park and took a short walk to Lake Derwent or Derwent Water. Unlike our visit to Crow Park in spring, there were no lambs or sheep in sight during December. Only ducks, gulls and geese greeted us by the lake.

The calm winter morning made a walk by Derwent Water a much enjoyed experience. Plenty of photo opportunities for the family too.

Winter Morning at Derwent Waters, Keswick, Lake District England

We left Derwent Water at about 12.15 PM. Daniel took the wheels for the drive to Cheltenham and I got to see a snow covered hill in the Lake District, finally.

Finally got to see some snow in the Lake District ….on the hill top as we were leaving.

 On the M6 towards Cheltenham.

The drive to Cheltenham should take about 4 hours on the M6 but it took longer than that. We encountered start-stop traffic on the M6 somewhere en-route. Looked like everyone was returning home from their Christmas break. The best thing to do then was to take lunch at one the rest stops and hope for the trafiic to improve later. By the time I drove into Cheltenham, it was dark.

Drive to Cheltenham

Our stay at Cheltenham was at the Bridge House, along Lansdown Road. Lansdown Road is quite easy to locate but not the B&B. There was no lit signage visible from the road. So I did two rounds down Lansdown Road before I finally found the B&B. Checking in was fast and then it was off to explore Cheltenham city center and to look for a place to have dinner.

We parked the car along the Promenade which was supposed to be a good shopping street but it was relatively deserted as shops were closed. We saw the popular Hare and the Minotaur bronze sculpture in Cheltenham city centre and a few other popular attractions. We found a Chinese restaurant and it was a welcomed change after the last few days of Western food.
