Jeju Day 2 (Part 2) – Seopjikoji

1 October 2011

Seopjikoki on Jeju

I had booked at private taxi tour to bring us to selected attractions on the Eastern part of Jeju-do (similar private taxi tour can be booked atTrazy.com).

After visiting Soesokkak Estuary, Seongup Folk Village (Jeju Day 2 Part 1), our driver Mr Won drove us to Seopjikoji, located at the end of the eastern shore of Jeju Island and boasts a fantastic scenery

He pointed out a pyramid-shape modern looking building with glass structure on the road leading to Seopjikoji.  He told us it was the lobby for the many villas that were located in the area. He dropped us off at the carpark which was full of cars and buses.

Seopjikoji is a popular place for tourists, honeymooners and locals. For those interested to see or ride the Jeju ponies, this is available here. On the open fields, there is a lone building which is a church used for filming the Korean drama “All In”. Drama fans could pay a small fee to enter the building for a look but we skipped this.

I was more fascinated by the beautiful open space, views of the ocean and rocky coastline and lighthouse. Many Korean dramas (K-drama) were filmed here. No wonder.

Mr Won helped to take some photos of us and left us to wander on our own time while he waited in the car park. That is the best thing about a DIY tour; no rush or time restriction. So we took a slow walk up to the lighthouse which is the highest point here.

In spring, this place would be awash with yellow rape flowers. In autumn, we could see the silver reeds swaying in the wind instead.

After going up to the lighthouse, we took the metal staircase down and continued along the path to an area where the Sunrise Peak (our next destination) could be seen across the water. The wind was particularly strong here. Note the flying handbag above!

We saw a Hyeopja smoke mound, used for signalling by soldiers defending Jeju in the old days. This was one the 38 smoke mounds that could be found around the coastal areas in Jeju. In addition, many rock piles could be seen. We had seen similar rock piles in Scotland where these were left behind by those who want their wishes granted or be blessed.

Sunrise Peak or Seongsan Ilchulbong would be our next stop.
